Using Industrial Rope Access for Façade Ordinance Inspections
1 AIA Learning Unit
Description
Compared to the expense of conventional means of access, Industrial Rope Access (IRA) can provide a low-cost
solution to planning for building repairs and maintenance and for complying with façade ordinances. The
presentation will review the history of IRA worldwide and the growing popularity of the method in the United
States. Commonly used IRA equipment will be introduced and explained. The evolution of specific industry and
consensus standards related to industrial rope access will be reviewed, including OSHA, ANSI and ASTM.
Learning Objectives
- Learn about the existing façade ordinances in US Cities, including reporting requirements
- Learn about the site-specific evaluation of appropriate access means: how to evaluate whether a lift, swing stage or IRA (or a combination) is appropriate.
- Learn about the regulatory and market history of IRA in the United States. Review applicable standard including OSHA, ANSI and ASTM along with industry standards such as SPRAT and IRATA.
- Review challenging case studies where IRA was chosen and why and sites where it wasn’t chosen.
